Planting Options
We Plant
Preserve the character of your neighborhood by planting 2″ caliper trees installed by a professional landscaper. Cost is $350 per tree. Learn more below.
You Plant
Set up a neighborhood tree order from us and we’ll deliver a 15 gallon tree straight to your door. We’ll give you planting instructions. You plant the tree. Cost is $150 per tree. Learn more below.
Volunteers Plant
TreesUpstate will coordinate a neighborhood-wide tree planting event and install 15- gallon trees with community volunteers. Free to residents. This program targets neighborhoods with little to no existing tree canopy. Learn more below.
We Plant
Program Description
Lead a tree project in your community to preserve and improve the character of the neighborhood. Be a NeighborWood Champion. 2″ caliper trees will be installed for participating residents in the neighborhood boundary.
Requirements
Find 5+ neighbors or locations for 10+ trees in your neighborhood.
Cost
$350 per tree, including a 2″ caliper B&B tree, delivery, professional installation and mulching. 2 year warranty.

Program Description

TreesUpstate will hand deliver 15-gallon trees to participating residents in the neighborhood boundary. Plant the trees independently or with neighborhood volunteers as part of a community effort. We’ll give you planting directions.

Volunteers Plant
Program Description
Our Volunteers Plant It together with community volunteers! The goal of this program is tree equity. This community tree planting initiative targets neighborhoods with little to no tree canopy. TreesUpstate will coordinate a neighborhood-wide tree planting event to install 15 gallon trees with volunteers.
Greenville County Redevelopment Authority (GCRA) neighborhoods, Greenville Dreams, Habitat for Humanity neighborhoods and City of Greenville Special Interest neighborhoods always qualify! Previous Projects include Monaghan, Brutontown, Freetown, Sans Souci, Needmore, Abigail Springs and Saluda Bluffs.
Requirements
Find 12+ neighbors and plant 17-30 15-gallon trees in your neighborhood. Residents are responsible for marking private utilities which may include but are not limited to: water, sewer, & irrigation.
Cost
FREE to residents. Includes a 15-gallon tree, delivery, tree diaper for watering, site visit with a TreesUpstate staff member, SC811 call, project coordination, and volunteer installation. Tree replacements are not included, but we offer free 3 gallon trees several times a year through our Energy Saving Trees program.

If you do not have enough community support from your neighbors and you’re just looking for tree(s) for your household: Check out TreesUpstate’s Energy Saving Trees program, presented by Duke Energy to learn where you can simply pick up a free 3 gallon tree in December 2021.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I plant a tree in my front yard or backyard?
Yes! While our goal is to plant front yard trees, we will plant a tree anywhere on your property. However, in our Volunteers Plant It! program, free trees must be planted in front yards.
I am looking for resources to reforest my land. Can TreesUpstate help with this?
Unfortunately, TreesUpstate does not assist homeowners with reforestation projects on private property at this time. For bare root seedling purchases, we recommend ArborGen.
How big is a neighborhood?
We work with a neighborhood champion to set a neighborhood boundary for our projects. The total area should be in the range of 5 to 15 blocks or .5 to 2 square miles. For the Volunteers Plant It! program, the neighborhood must be walkable from end to end in 15-20 minutes.
Do you have resources for me to send to my neighbors to tell them about the project?
Yes! Contact us to see if you qualify for one of the above planting options. If you qualify, we’ll work with you to develop digital and/or printed resources for your neighborhood.
What is a tree diaper?
A tree diaper is a watering mat that lays around the trunk of the tree under the mulch. The tree diaper can absorb rainwater and can retain water for up to one month, slowly dripping it into the root zone of the tree. It lasts for 5 years.
What kind of trees are available?
We plant over 50 different species and cultivars annually, but availability is determined by our partner nurseries. Our focus is on planting large native canopy trees. We work with the neighborhood champion to build a species list for each neighborhood. Examples of species we plant include: oak species, tulip poplar, black tupelo, american hornbeam, eastern red cedar, magnolia, & baldcypress.
How many trees does one household qualify for?
One household can plant up to 2 trees through the Volunteers Plant It! program. With We Plant It! and You Plant It!, there is no limit to trees per household, but our goal is to focus efforts on a neighborhood-wide campaign rather than a single residence.
Can I request a specific species not on your list?
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate specific requests not on your neighborhood availability list.
