THE PROGRAM

TreesUpstate is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization that plants, promotes, and protects trees in Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg Counties. Our Workforce Development program nourishes a culture of self-empowerment for 18 – 30 year-olds aspiring towards meaningful and stable employment, as we protect and improve the environment. We train and employ people who are at-risk of being excluded from stable employment as they move towards family-sustaining jobs.

We provide paid training, industry certifications, paid work experience, career coaching, and assistance finding future employment. Our trainees practice industry and soft skills while working at environmental worksites. Ultimately, we support their transition to good jobs and lasting careers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply?

Are you looking for work that is challenging, fulfilling, and meaningful? Do you want to learn about environmental justice and make a difference in your community?  Plant your future and grow your career. Join our Workforce Development program and gain hands-on experience and technical knowledge to meet the needs of employers of professional tree care and landscaping companies. Applicants for the TreesUpstate Workforce program must be 18-30 and interested in tree maintenance and working outdoors. Check the full list of requirements here to make sure you’re eligible.

How do I know if I want to be part of the TreesUpstate Workforce Program?

Do you love trees, being outside, or have an interest in environmental justice? Do you like working with your hands or are ready to learn new skills?  Then you’d fit right in. The program would also be great for anyone looking to explore a non-traditional career path with paid training and support.

If chosen, how much will I be paid?

Our work readiness program begins on Tuesday, January 17, 2025 and ends on April 18, 2025. You’ll be fairly compensated while training, earning a $13 per hour full time with opportunities for wage increases based on performance and completion of our two week tree keepers course and exam.  The work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30am to 4pm. Participants who successfully find and accept a job in the industry and receive a positive review from their new supervisor (after 2 weeks) will receive a $500 bonus!

Does this program help me get a full time job?

Yes! Of course, you must do the work and put in the effort. We offer classes and hands-on training to help you with job skills, soft skills, and industry specific skills including pruning, planting, and landscaping. We’ll also help you get your driver’s license but remember, you must do the work.

In addition, we partner with landscapers and tree care employers and learn what their needs are. We’ll introduce you to employers through Careers and Training Days to help you explore the many career options available. Do you like climbing trees, working on a team or working with equipment? We have a career that meets your interest! We’ll also provide career coaching, mentoring and successfully proven interviewing tips. Many wraparound services are available from financial literacy (“getting to the bag”), healthy life skills, breaking habits and more!
